Taliban fighters fired their weapons into the air, celebrating victory after a 20-year rebellion in Afghanistan, because the last US aircraft breathed in their wheels around midnight on Monday.
The Taliban has proclaimed "full independence" for Afghanistan and celebration shots heard in Kabul when the US confirmed his last troops resigned from the deadline on Tuesday after the 20-year war. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Tuesday that "American soldiers left Kabul airport, and our nation had full independence."
Anas Haqqani, a senior Taliban official, said he was "proud" to watch "this historic moment". "We made history again, I was very happy that after 20 years of jihad, sacrifice & difficulty I had this pride to see these historic moments," Haqqani tweeted.
AFP reported the sound of a small arm and a heavier fire engine continued 45 minutes after the first announcement and the tracking round lights up in the Afghan Kabul. In another tweet, Haqqani also urged Taliban fighters to avoid celebration shots to ensure no innocent observers.
"All American troops have left Afghanistan, we are very happy - you can listen to shots of celebrations," Bilal Karimi, another Taliban spokesman, told AFP by telephone.
