The Supreme Court has granted a one-time suspended sentence to almost 100 detainees who have spent more than 20 years in prison.
The detainees are being held in Uttar Pradesh prisons. Most of them are serving their sentences in Agra Central Jail.
"Since the applicants have been in prison for more than 20 years, they will be released on temporary ad bail in accordance with the terms and conditions set by the Tribunal on satisfaction," Bench of Justices Indira Banerjee andJ. Maheshwari ordered.
Advocate Rishi Malhotra, of the detainees, said the detainees experienced "a shocking and tragic situation in the State despite serving more than 20 years of total sentence and despite having the right to be released early under the August 1, 2018, power law under Article 1. 161 of the Constitution, they continue to suffer in prisons ”.
"This is nothing but illegal detention," said Mr. Malhotra.
The Supreme Court also earlier acquitted dozens of inmates who continued to remain in prisons in Uttar Pradesh despite receiving sentencing.
The court not only accepted the applications against their illegal detention and violation of basic rights but also ordered their release.
