Shreyas Iyer stepped up his class on the fourth day of the first Test between India and New Zealand as he pulled the hosts out of a deep hole with a fine 65-run strike in the second innings. Top India backed out in the fourth day after the bowlers gave the hosts a good chance of 49 runs, beating New Zealand by 296 in the first innings. Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson left Ajinkya Rahane's team in a state of 51/5 as Shreyas combined a crucial 52-run pitch with Ravichandran Ashwin to take India's leading over-the-run -150.

After Ashwin's dismissal Shreyas continued to play loudly alongside Wriddhiman Saha who hit the wicket. Once completed, both strikers take the calculated risk against the spinners to gain significant limits. Shreyas reached his centenary to become the first Indian batsman in the history of cricket to qualify for the first century and fifty. He became the 16th Indian to hit the centenary when he started playing in the first innings.
Shreyas was eventually sent off for 67 as he found a short glove on a short ball from Southee who was trying to pull it off. His 64-run stand with Saha made India surpass the entire set of 200 runs.
Shreyas hit eight good and six touchdowns in the second innings and showed good maturity at a time when senior batsmen like Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara failed to hit.
With this knock Shreyas made it difficult for the team management to decide who they lost and who they lost in the second Test match, when regular captain Virat Kohli returned.
For now though the team will focus on getting more runs in the final session and then play for the Kiwi.
